Music

I’ve always loved to sing! Over the years I have gotten more comfortable with singing and with actually sounding good! This is not egotistical but a real accomplishment for me. For many decades I have self-sabotaged because I didn’t want to seem too much. I believe that many of us are conditioned to not reach for all we want and all that we can be. Today, my goal is to be whatever and whoever I am, and know that I’m safe being that.

Here’s a recent photo of my accompanist and friend, Patsy Rose and me. We have been performing at Retirement Centers which is a lot of fun and does a lot of good, we think!

Below are four songs that I sang not long ago.

Do you like to sing? Do you have a story about music? What are your hopes and dreams around being all you are?

“You change the world by being yourself.”

Singing “Windmills of Your Mind” by Michel Legrand and English lyrics written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. This was at Cafe Paradiso in Fairfield, Iowa, from 2023.

— Yoko Ono

Singing “Ticket to Ride” (Carpenters-style cover). The venue is the Golden Magnolia Community Center in Fairfield, Iowa. The band is Dr. Dave’s Jazz Mojos. Saxophone solo by Steve the Saxman. This was from early 2025. This song is used under YouTube’s licensing policy; the copyright holder allows its use on the platform.

I’m singing “In My Life” by the Beatles, in the style of Jose Feliciano. The band is Dr. Dave’s Jazz Mojos. This was recorded at the Golden Magnolia in 2024.

Singing “The Christmas Song” by Mel Torme and Bob Wells. I start singing at 1:34. This was at Cafe Paradiso in 2023.

Singing is one of the most fun things that I do. It’s where I think I can be my most authentic. A lot of the credit goes to my Singing Teacher for several years, Megan O’Brien of Iowa City, Iowa. Visit her at O’Brien Studios on Facebook.
